The Zuger family’s commitment to catering dates back to the 1960’s when Swiss-born Doris Zuger turned her talent for home-cooking to good effect at a hotel in Wallasey. In 1973 when her children had left school, the family bought the Dresden Hotel in Bromborough and soon built up an enviable reputation. Our customers still fondly remember the Dresden Smorgasbord and the meals which they enjoyed there.
The Dresden Hotel was eventually sold in 2004 but a younger generation was now growing up and the temptation of opening a new business became too strong. In October 2006 this materialised as Zuger’s of Bromborough - a tea room and confectioners with a strong continental flavor. This was followed by Zuger’s of Chester in 2009 and, most recently, by Zuger’s Bistro opened in Bebington in 2012. The oldest member of the family is far from forgotten, even though it is her children and grandchildren who between them share chef, bakery and front-of-house duties. Doris Zuger, now in her energetic eighties, still provides “Grandma’s bread” and bunloaf.
All the food is prepared on the premises. Wherever possible, farm produce from local suppliers is used with daily deliveries to ensure maximum freshness. The menus at all branches change seasonally but always include such Swiss staples as Alpine Rosti, Wiener Schnitzel and Apple Strudel.
The Bromborough shop opens during the day Monday to Saturday and can be booked in the evening for private party groups. The Chester shop (which has recently won Chester’s Best Café Gold Award for the third year running) is open during the day 7 days a week.
Bromborough and Chester Branches operate on a first-come-first-served basis with no advance booking. There may be a queue at the busiest of times but please be assured it is well worth the wait.
The Zuger family hope to welcome you back soon, whether in Bromborough or Chester.
